Larry McCray, the second youngest of nine children, was raised on a small farm in Magnolia, Arkansas. His father played the blues on harmonica and guitar, and his older sister Clara was a guitarist and disciple of Freddie King. The family had records by John Lee Hooker, Howlin' Wolf, Jimmy Reed and Muddy Waters, among others. McCray cites the musical influence of the three blues Kings - B.B., Albert and Freddie - on his guitar playing, as well as Albert Collins, Elmore James and Magic Sam. Larry McCray is one of a handful of talented young blues performers leading the genre across boundaries and into the new century. McCray's savage blues-rock guitar and warm, soulful vocals have drawn attention worldwide. Live On 75, on December 6, 2005. A new studio album and tour is to follow in late 2006. The blues is Larry McCray's business, and business is good!

Subject: Fair Havens/Little Havens Charity Night - Wednesday 8th November
Date: Tue, 7 Nov 2006 19:54:45 -0000
An update to yesterday's mail:

This Wednesday (November 8th) at the Riga Music Bar in Westcliff - www.rigamusicbar.co.uk - sees the return of the Fair Haven and Little Haven Charity Night. All the money taken at the door goes to these two hospices as all the performers will be playing for free, and there will also be a raffle to raise more money. Among the prizes this year is a Hot Air Balloon Flight and a guitar donated by PMT which will be signed by all the performers (must be a massive guitar!!).

So, just who is performing? Well, Matt Schofield is not able to as he is touring in Canada but Ian Siegal may be if he is fully recovered (he has been ill recently - get well soon Ian). It is never possible to be 100% sure who will be there on the night but apart from The Rockin' Armadillos the Riga tell me that they are pretty confident that the line up will include Jon Amor, Papa George, Gary Fletcher (The Blues Band), Bill Hurley, Roy Mette, Val Cowell (Bad Influence), Harry James (Thunder/Bad Influence), West Weston, Pete Nash, members of The Swamp Cats, members of The Nightflies, members of Eddie & The Hot Rods, Ray Bartrip, Len Tuckey, members of The Cadillac Kings, The Groove Doctors, Martin McNeill and no doubt others that just get dragged along because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time!!
Who might also turn up? There's a chance - just a chance - that members of Bill Wyman's Rhythm Kings will come along after their gig at The Cliffs Pavilion and there's also just a chance that Peter Green will come along as well.
Whatever happens it will be a great night just as the others have been and hopefully it will sell out for the third time. Don't forget, any or none of the above may or may not appear, it really is down to their availability on the night so no guarantees other than you can be sure of a brilliant night and a very warm feeling because you are helping a very deserving cause.

Entry is just £10.00 and to be sure of getting in it is recommended that you get there early. Doors open at 8 p.m.

Subject: FW: Our venue under threat ~ again!
Date: Sun, 5 Nov 2006 09:04:20 -0000

As you may be aware the planning application behind Zaffa in Maidstone was withdrawn when the property developer realised the project would be rejected by the council......This saved our venue from the dangers of closure but sadly this threat has been resurrected.
The land immediately behind our venue now has another application pending.....for 14 X 2 bedroom flats. Nobody has any objection to this provided the existing use of Zaffa is protected......but that's not the case. Notwithstanding that we have run our famous blues nights there for 10 years & the fact that Ciaran (the owner) has also run folk, country & salsa events there for many years it would take just ONE complaint from a new resident to close the whole thing down. This is ridiculously unfair but it is the reality.
If you value your club please email your objections to
steveclarke@maidstone.gov.uk
Please be polite.....it's not Steve Clarke's fault & we want the council on our side but the more support we can muster for Zaffa/Mu Mu the greater the chance this application will be withdrawn.
There are precious few places in Maidstone (or Rochester/Chatham come to that) where "grown-ups" can go out for an evening of World Class entertainment. Every town in the country is being taken over by "drinking factories" & we wonder why we have a "youth" problem.....that's not the case with The Bottleneck Blues Club......we offer a wonderful environment for a family night out.....don't let them take that away from us..............THANKS.
Don't forget the forthcoming gig on Friday 10th @ Zaffa.
Big Joe Louis & His Blues Kings + Migden & Gibson.......Fantastic!!!

Subject: DAWN O'KEEFE WILLIAMS Diva Contest Sun. Nov 5 @ B.L.U.E.S 2519 N. Halsted, Chicago

Hi Everyone!

come celebrate the Women In Blues

What: Diva Contest
Where: Blues, 2519 N. Halsted & Kingston Mines across the street
When: Sunday Nov. 5; 9:00pm

I will be singing three sets in this contest; if it's like the one last week which featured other singers, then I will be performing a set at BLUES; and 2 sets at Kingston Mines. The time frame(s) will be posted at the clubs. Pay one cover for entry to both clubs.

Stop by BLUES, 2519 N. Halsted, Chicago & Kingston Mines (across the street) Sunday Nov 5th, get a marble or whatever the doorman gives you and drop it in the box at each club with my name on it. For a cover of $8 you can go to both clubs and see me and the other performers - a total of three bands! BUT please put your vote (marble) in my box! (sounds like the blues to me!) There will be 2 other featured singers since this is a Diva contest but we don't want to talk about them! lol You really want to catch my show :)- Come early - drop in a marble and give me some support! Show starts at 9:00. I won't know my exact lineup of where I will be singing first until I get there. So just come on out and have some fun!

Hope to see you there!

Dawn
